When I am asked about either previous work experience or off-campus opportunities offered through Luther, I immediately recall the summer after my sophomore year in which I had the privilege of becoming an intern in Washington, D.C., or just D.C. to Washington residents. Through our campus contact, John Moeller, professor of political science, I applied to the Lutheran College Washington Consortium (LCWC), and through the program, I was set up with an internship opportunity. I lived with three other students in a condo overlooking Virginia, and experienced big-city living. I recommend that everyone take advantage of Luther's internship opportunities, so let me give my recounting:

Walking towards the D.C. Metro on my first day of work, I had so many fears and expectations streaming through my head. Before I left for D.C., all of my friends and family told me, "Now don't disappear on us!" and "Remember to stay away from those married men!" I had the assumption that everyone would be corrupt and competitive, so this made me nervous to meet my employers and fellow interns.

The capital of Western Australia, is supposedly Australia's sunniest capital. It is also the most isolated capital city in the world. Perth is over 4400km (2750mi) from Sydney by road. The next closest "city" as defined by population is the costal town of Mandurah, about 100kms south. The closest capital city is Perth, in South Australia.

I worked for Contracts, Regulatory and Personnel within the Commercial Division of the D.C. office of the Corporation Counsel. I helped attorneys with litigation involving the D.C. government, so it was a professional 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. job that required I dress in clothes appropriate for court at all times. We were spontaneously called by judges who were very strict as to how people need to conduct themselves within their courtroom, so I always had my hair pulled back, a blazer to throw on and never chewed gum. I was in court for most of the morning observing attorneys and taking notes. During the rest of the day, I would assist two attorneys whom I was assigned to. Contrary to popular belief, my relationship with the attorneys was totally professional. They made me feel comfortable by cracking jokes, taking me and the rest of the interns out for lunch and inviting us to parties and business meetings. Most of the time we discussed ethics and many of the attorneys discussed their personal lives and families, which really made an impact on how I perceived them. business opportunity vending

The internship gave me insight into what the workplace is like and whether law is what I want to pursue after Luther. I did not sit at a desk in a cubicle and answer phone calls all day as some may think, but I had the chance to meet, and ask questions of judges and officials and I was entrusted with confidential tasks. I researched precedents and called witnesses, and the attorneys placed trust in my research and writing. business christian home

One suit involved an infringement on a copyright law, and I had to research precedents, call professionals, consult lawyers and finally type a memo stating whether the suit should pursue, why, and what steps would need to be taken. What most people don't realize is that there are more than political internships offered in D.C. There are countless internship opportunities within D.C. that cover almost any area of interest. In the group I was with, there were history majors, art majors, communications majors and the list goes on. People worked within the White House, National Archives, CNN, a feminist lobbying agency, etc. So within the LCWC, most people can find an internship relating to their major. based business christian home

Not only was the experience within the workplace great, but the culture and nightlife of a large city was wonderful. There were opportunities to learn and experience new things through the LCWC and through my own planning. Every weekend I tried a different cuisine ranging from Vietnamese to Thai and there were always free concerts advertised for the public. Through the program, I attended concerts and educational programs, such as a performance of "Kiss Me Kate," tours of the Pentagon and State Department and lectures by influential leaders, like President Ford. I attended at least five free concerts and a couple free plays on my own, not to mention visiting museums, theaters, monuments, federal buildings, committee meetings and protests/demonstrations. business free home opportunity

Though D.C. has proved to be hospitable to interns, they are victims of prejudices. On the one hand, they are dismissed as too ignorant and naïve to be trusted with anything more than transferring callers to voice mail, when, in fact, interns do not deserve derision because they are a backbone of many businesses. business income internet

So in sum, I recommend that everyone apply for an internship because the experience looks great on a resume and the skills learned are applicable to almost any time or place.
