Date 12/5/1996 12:00 AM | Topic: NewsThe government of President Slobodan Milosevic recently annulled the election of opposition candidates to municipal office (see "Around the World in a Column," pg. 9) and students, workers and middle-class professionals have taken to the streets in protest. In order to keep word of the protests from spreading, the Serbian government has jammed the broadcast of the only independent news agency in Serbia, Radio B-92.
The staff of B-92 persists in their efforts to get the truth of the protests out to the people. They cover every protest and broadcast every speech using cassette, walkie-talkie, cellular phone and radio broadcasts to get as much of the news out as they can. As news of the protests spreads more people join in. In a battle between the victory of people's will and secret police tactics, the efforts of B-92 are vital. Apparently the frequency jamming is weak on the outskirts of Belgrade, and some enterprising listeners can tune in by holding onto their radio antennas while standing in bathtubs full of water.
In a humble show of solidarity with our journalist colleagues, we have colored our cover pages black in protest of the Fascist efforts by Belgrade to cover-up the press and the truth. We encourage our readers to seek out issues of censorship at home and abroad and make their own statements.
