South Florida Based ITWomen Gives Women the Opportunity to Pursue High-Tech Careers Through the ITWomen Charitable Foundation Scholarship Program
MIAMI, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- ITWomen, South Florida's organization dedicated to the advancement and development of women in technology, proudly announced their first ITWomen Charitable Foundation College Scholarship 2005 and Terremark Scholarship available to women who wish to pursue a career in technology. The goal of ITWomen's scholarship program is to minimize the gender gap in the technology field by promoting professional education and training for women entering the field."As the founder of ITWomen, it is a privilege to offer women scholarships and training opportunities that will jumpstart their careers in technology," said Victoria Usherenko, president of ITWomen. "This scholarship fund marks a milestone in our organization, and we will strive to continue to provide these educational opportunities along with networking opportunities for women across the information technology spectrum."
The ITWomen Charitable Foundation College Scholarship 2005 is available to graduating high school senior girls who have been accepted or are enrolled in a post secondary institution (college, university or vocational school) in the Tri-County area (Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach). One recipient per county will be selected. Each recipient will receive a $1,000-a-year, renewable scholarship for four years to finish their IT degree. The selection is based on a wide array of factors including financial assistance, program of study and a 250-word essay describing why the applicant is pursuing a degree in IT or related field. The recipients for the scholarships will be selected by the ITWomen Scholarship Selection Committee, comprised of members from local South Florida academic institutions and industry. A member of ITWomen will be assigned to each scholarship recipient to coach the recipient throughout her educational career.
Thanks to the support of Terremark Worldwide, the ITWomen Charitable Foundation-Terremark Scholarship will provide a one time $500 scholarship. It is available to women who are currently enrolled in a post secondary institution in the Tri-County area. This is geared towards ladies who wish to major in IT or a related field. The selection is based on scholastic achievement (GPA- minimum 3.0), program of study and a 250-word essay describing why the applicant is pursuing a degree in IT or related field.
Funds for the scholarship were made possible in part by ITWomen's CIO Silent Auction, which raised $14,000, thanks to the twenty top South Florida CIOs that donated their time to the cause, including Tery Howard, Director of IT for the Miami Dolphins; Patty Morrison, EVP and CIO for Office Depot; Mike Sutten, VP and CIO of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Miles Cyr of Carnival Cruise Lines.
All applications for the scholarships must be received by March 31, 2005. To find more information about the scholarships and ITWomen, please visit http://www.itwomen.org/ .
