"The Two Towers" Preview: Get ready for the biggest film of the year

"The Two Towers" Preview: Get ready for the biggest film of the year

Date 12/12/2002 12:00 AM | Topic: Arts & Culture

These are exciting times for all of us, my fellow stressed-out peers. Not because the end of the semester is almost here, not because its time to go home and let the parents know your pretty much broke and have $150 dollars worth of parking tickets, but because "The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers" is coming to theaters next Wednesday.

That's right, it's almost here. So I say screw the studying, screw the paper which you were going to throw together the night before it was due anyway, and lets talk the mystical adventure talk and walk the mystical adventure walk and see where we end up.

Before "The Two Towers," the second installment of The Lord of The Rings trilogy can be discussed, let's quickly review last year's "The Fellowship of The Ring" to see where we left off. Remember...an ancient ring that was crafted by the Dark Lord Sauron, which had been lost for centuries, and was capable of ruling all Middle-Earth had ended up through a twist of fate in the hands of a hobbit named Frodo Babbins. When Gandalf, a great wizard, discovers that Frodo possessed the ring of power, Frodo is thrust into an epic quest to the fiery caverns of Mount Doom, the only place where the ring could be destroyed.

However, Frodo does not go alone. A fellowship of the ring is formed to protect Frodo and the ring on their journey. When "Fellowship of The Ring" ends, Frodo and his best friend Sam had just left the rest of the fellowship to continue the quest alone. Legolas the elf, Gimli the Dwarf, and Aragon were off to rescue Merry and Pippin, two hobbits that had been captured by Orcs. This is where the first movie ends and the second movie begins.

We all remember that "movie moment" that moved us emotionally. For some it is a sentimental feeling, for others an inspiring feeling. For example, the first couple of times I watched "Old Yeller" I might have cried. I can't really remember I was very young.

But there are other feelings you can grasp from a good movie. When I watched Braveheart for the first time, I wanted to travel back in time to fight alongside William Wallace. The reason I bring this particular movie up is that "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" will hold one of the most influential battles in middle earth history, Helms Deep, a scene that may quite possibly be the greatest movie experience of Leif and I's existence.

This battle is where King Theoden, Gimli, and Legolas battle the forces of Suarumon. Helms Deep will contain thousands of separate battle scenes and will follow each of the main character's movements through the chaos. The Two Towers also find Sam and Frodo journeying ever closer to Mordor, the home of the evil lord Sauron and the ever seeing eye, more reasons to bet on the probability that this is going to be one kickass flick.

Leif and I have been so excited for this movie that we have decided to hold out on seeing any other movies until the first showing next Wednesday (a very strenuous task considering our pedigree as cultured movie connoisseurs). No "Eight Mile." No "Harry Potter." No "Treasure Planet" (Leif really wanted to go to this one, but I remained stern with him).

In fact, we have been so focused on this upcoming event that we almost forgot to study for our finals next week.

After reading the books and seeing what they did with the first movie, we believe this will not be just a great movie, but a life changing one, a film that may quite possibly be a viable candidate for the most illustrious benchmark of all great films: the full five beer mug rating. Still six days and counting till we get to see.

In closing, we'd like to say thanks for reading our reviews this year, good luck to all of you on your finals and until next time see you at the movies. PEACE.
